Contempo: An Award-Winning Gift Shop in Stirling

Christmas

Our guide to the top Scottish gifts for men

We know the problem well. Whether it is your dad, your husband, your brother or the one you drew in Secret Santa, the man in your life is usually the hardest to buy for. Last year it was slippers. The year before, cufflinks. You have never seen him wear either.

We are an independent gift shop on King Street in Stirling, and we handpick every Scottish piece we carry. So here is our guide to gifts he will actually use, grouped by the kind of man he is. Find him below and you are most of the way there.

Spinning whisky glass with a twist pattern and three granite whisky stones

For the man who loves a wee dram

You cannot go far wrong with whisky in Scotland. The trick is giving him something that makes the ritual better, rather than another bottle he will finish by Sunday.

  • Spinning Glass & Whisky Stones Set, £15. A handmade glass with a rounded base that spins to open up the dram, plus three reusable granite stones so nothing gets watered down. A bit of theatre with every pour.
  • Risky Whisky: Poisonous Party Game, £12. Drink or pass? A fast, funny Scottish bluffing game for four to ten players, where only one of you makes it to the end of the night. Rounds take about twenty minutes.
  • Distillery Soap, £8.50. A warming, handmade UK bar with beautiful illustrated distillery packaging. The whisky lover who has everything probably does not have this.
  • A Wee Dram Bamboo Socks, £6.99. Soft bamboo socks with a whisky print, sized UK 8-11. The easiest wee gift on this list, and it costs less than a decent measure.

For the proudly Scottish

If Scotland has an unofficial mascot, it is the Highland cow, and these are the ones that keep walking out the door.

  • Highland Cow Shaped Mug, £14.50. A proper 500ml ceramic mug moulded into the shape of a coo, fringe and horns included. No half measures at breakfast.
  • Fluffy Coo Socks, £8. Navy socks with a genuinely fluffy raised coo. Daft, warm and always a hit.
  • Highland Cow Travel Coffee Cup, £9. A 400ml reusable cup in recycled RPET with a parade of coos round the side. For the commute, the dog walk or the touchline.
  • The Colours of Scotland Print, £21. Forty-two labelled watercolour swatches drawn from Scottish icons, from Highland cow to Edinburgh Castle. A quietly clever bit of wall art.
  • Wee Scottish House, £14.50. A tiny hand-thrown ceramic house, made in Edinburgh, no two the same. We send them at random, so it is a little surprise in itself.

For the practical one

If he would rather have something he uses every day, genuine Harris Tweed is hard to beat. It is the only fabric in the world protected by its own Act of Parliament, handwoven in the Outer Hebrides, and it wears in beautifully rather than wearing out.

For the man who likes a laugh

Some men are impossible to buy for because they take nothing seriously. Lean into it.

  • Can’t Be Arsed Cup, £17.95. A wonky, glossy peach ceramic cup with a word hidden inside the rim. You will have to look to find out which.
  • Grumpy Old Man Bamboo Socks, £6.99. Soft bamboo argyle with the diagnosis knitted right across the calf.
  • Shakespearean Profanities, £6.99. One hundred genuine Shakespearean insults, each with its play, act and scene, rated by how much they sting. Educational, technically.

For the man who loves to host

For the one who always has people round, the good stuff is small, useful and a talking point.

  • Playing Card Drink Mats, £9.99. A full 54-card deck printed onto absorbent beer mats. Every drink gets its own card, and nobody loses track of their glass.
  • Wrench Beer Bottle Opener, £9. A 17cm antiqued brass opener shaped like a spanner. Handsome enough to leave out on the side.

A taste of Scotland

Edible gifts are never wasted, and these two are made properly.

For the man who would rather be up a hill

  • The Ochils: 40 Favourite Walks, £6.99. Douglas Milne’s illustrated guide to forty routes through the Ochils, taking in castles, standing stones and hillforts. Perfect for anyone who knows the view from Dumyat.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good Scottish gift for a man?
Something he will use rather than display. Harris Tweed wallets and card holders, whisky accessories, Highland cow mugs and socks, and Scottish chocolate are our most popular choices for men, and all of them post easily.

What do you buy the man who has everything?
Go for character over practicality. A daft pair of coo socks, a wonky handmade mug or a card game he would never buy himself tends to land far better than another gadget.

Do you post Scottish gifts across the UK?
Yes. We are an independent gift shop in Stirling and post across the whole of the UK, with free delivery on orders over £50.

What makes Harris Tweed a good gift?
It is genuinely rare. Harris Tweed is handwoven in the Outer Hebrides and protected by its own Act of Parliament, so every piece carries the Orb mark. It also ages well, which makes it a gift that lasts for years rather than months.
